Max “The Sax” Colley and His Young Lions –
Back in the day when my son Max III was still in high school and started playing gigs, and people would call about booking one of us I had to ask, do you want Max the sax or Max the trumpet? The Young Lions comes from terminology used when the young cat musicians were making their imprint on the music world, which all of these guys are doing. I am so proud of all of them and I am thrilled that they would all come back to do another gig with their “old” band teacher.
I wanted to do tunes that feature a well-known saxophonist or saxophone solo and this I want to feature each of them on a piece well known for their instrument. You are going to hear music by Paul Desmond/Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderly, David Sanborn, Steely Dan, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, Ray Brown, Sonny Rollins, Larry Carlton, Horace Silver and Junior Walker & the All-Stars.
We are going to present an array of styles. There should be something for everyone. In addition Cary & I are going to do some vocals and my grandson Elijah Cosby (in 7th grade at Crossroads) is going to join us on drum set on a tune. This year I am happy to report that Tami Helm & Judy Pellerito are going to sing some background vocals with us.
We will also have a tribute to “Supersax” with me, Nate Colley (2001) Lucas Keur (2013) Joel Brusk (1999) and Don Myers (1982) playing “K.C. Blues”.
In addition we have a group called “Fathers and Sons” featuring me & my two sons and Mr. David Wells with his two sons Mark and Greg.
It will be great to see you again. Plan on hanging out afterwards just to talk and catch up. The main purpose is to raise some money for the band program & make some wonderful music, but it will be like a gigantic Northview Band Party. Be there or be square.
